Sherlock Holmes

My role

  • Design

Tasked with finding and redesigning the covers of 3 books, my mind immediately turned to Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic series of short stories. And I thought, “Why not do all 12?”. Well, the answer to that question is that to do attempt to do so would be extremely unwise. But here we are.

This project was a lot of fun, seeing me move away from my usual style. The design challenge really lay in taking the plot of each book and distilling it into a single illustration; I took inspiration from the way that editorial illustrators are able to convey multiple concepts simultaneously, while also infusing a touch of humour.

A Scandal in Bohemia

Holmes meets his match in Irene Adler, who fools him by disguising herself as a street urchin.

The Red Headed League

A ginger man is distracted while his business partner tunnels under his business to attempt a bank heist.

A Case of Identity

A man disguises himself to steal his stepdaughter’s fortune, but is foiled when Sherlock recognises his typewriter’s quirks.

The Boscombe Valley Mystery

A murder is carried out in England in connection with violent historical events in Australia.

The Five Orange Pips

Murders carried out by the KKK are forewarned by the arrival of orange pips in the mail.

The Man with the Twisted Lip

A man disguised as a beggar in an opium den is exposed when Sherlock wipes off his makeup with a sponge.

The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle

An invaluable gem is found hidden in the stomach of a Christmas goose.

The Adventure of the Speckled Band

A man carries out murders at night using a venomous snake as his weapon.

The Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb

A man loses his thumb attempting to escape an illegal counterfeit coin factory.

The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor

A nobleman’s new wife elopes from their wedding with her former husband, presumed dead. Her wedding items are found floating in the river.

The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet

A precious diamond-studded crown is stolen. Sherlock solves the case by analysing footprints in the snow.

The Adventure of the Copper Breeches

A woman is imprisoned by her father, a practice still legal in England at the time.
