Black Lives Matter

I’m setting time aside every week, free of charge, for creative work supporting Māori, Pasifika, and in general BIPOC students, creatives, and organisations.

Events in the US this year have been horrifying, embarrassing, infuriating and everything in between. But my home is Aotearoa New Zealand, and there’s no pretending that our colonial history is any less ugly, or that as a white dude I haven’t benefited from similar systems of oppression here. That manifests in a lot of ways in everyday life, but specifically in my line of work as a designer, an obvious one is that 90% of the people in the industry look like me.

It’s hard to know how to act on this and instigate lasting change, but as a first step I can use my skillset to uplift, support and amplify. I’m aware that there is an inherent element of inserting myself into the equation here, but the goal is to act in a supporting role and to centre others’ work and messages. If you or someone you know might be interested in discussing a potential project, get in touch. It could be work related to BLM or similar local causes, but it doesn’t have to be. Timelines and scheduling will need to be discussed on a case-by-case basis. If you don't think I’m the right person for your project, thousands of other designers are giving their time here.
